Benefit for Bless Field: The Players

Hopefully you are planning to join us on April 4 at the Hollywood Theatre at 7:00 for our kickoff benefit for Bless Field: Beating Seattle Never Gets Old. We'll be screening some historic Timbers highlights with commentary throughout the evening from the players who were there: NASL Logo Willie Anderson is one of the longest-tenured players in Timbers history, making some 200 appearances for the club in three distinct stints between 1975 and 1982. A speedy winger who learned the game in his native Liverpool, he played at Manchester United, Aston Villa and Cardiff City before arriving in Portland and is among the Timbers’ all-time leaders in goals and assists.

For many Timbers fans and Portland-area soccer players, Bernie Fagan’s name is among the first they ever knew in association with the game. A longtime college coach, currently in that position at Warner Pacific College, Bernie came to the Timbers as a defender in 1980 after spells at Northampton Town, Scarborough and, ahem, Seattle, among other clubs. (To atone for this error, he had the good taste to be born in Sunderland.)

He’s here to talk Timbers, but Roger Goldingay could also talk about another of Portland’s quirky civic passions: food carts. He operates the Mississippi Marketplace and Cartopia pods. But he first made his way here in 1975 as a forward from Leicester, England, via, AHEM, Seattle. A man who wears many hats, he is surely the only ex-Timber to have published a novel about following the Grateful Dead on tour.

Mick Hoban was literally the first Timber, brought to Portland by Aston Villa manager Vic Crowe for the club’s inaugural season. Hoban had been in Aston Villa’s youth scheme and then its senior squad before coming to the US in 1971 to play for the Atlanta Chiefs (and, incidentally, earning a cap playing for his adopted country). When he left the Timbers after the 1978 season, it was to become the first employee fully dedicated to soccer operations at a little local outfit called Nike.

A great figure in Portland soccer history, Bill Irwin tended goal for the Timbers for but one season in a career that took him from Bangor in his native Northern Ireland to Cardiff in Wales, the Washington Diplomats and a handful of other clubs. But during a quarter-century as a coach at the University of Portland, he had helped make the school into a perennial men’s and women’s powerhouse, with many great players, including several former Timbers, passing on to professional careers. He has also coached the US Women’s International U-23 squad.

He was named Seamus Kelly when he was born in Northern Ireland, but winger Jimmy Kelly was rechristened Magic Feet when he played for the Timbers in their inaugural 1975 season. On loan to Portland from Wolverhampton, he became a cult hero here because of his small stature, his fiery mettle, his footballing wizardry (Sports Illustrated called him a “magician”), and his pop idol looks. Signs declaring “Jimmy Kelly for Mayor” were seen at matches throughout that amazing year.

Check out our prior post where we featured the historic matches to be screened.

Tickets are $12.00 in advance through Eventbrite, $15.00 at the door. Look forward to seeing you there!

A Benefit for Bless Field: The Matches

Hopefully you are planning to join us on April 4 at the Hollywood Theatre at 7:00 for our kickoff benefit for Bless Field: Beating Seattle Never Gets Old. We'll be screening some historic Timbers highlights with commentary throughout the evening from the players who were there. You'll see highlights from these classic matches: NASL LogoAugust 12, 1975: playoff semifinal, Seattle at Portland The Timbers began their history in May, 1975, with a loss at home to the Sounders before something like 7,500 fans. But when the teams met again, in July, there were 27,000 Portlanders watching the Timbers get their revenge. A third match in Seattle went the Sounders’ way, setting up the two teams on a collision course for this playoff semi-final, played before a then-record NASL crowd of 31,000. One of the great matches in the history of this storied rivalry.

June 12, 1976: Cosmos at Portland Led by Pele and Giorgio Chinaglia, the 1976 Cosmos scored a lot of goals, and the Timbers weren’t nearly as successful in their second season as in their debut year. So this wasn’t much of a game from a sporting standpoint. But it’s amazing to watch some of the game’s greatest names compete on the same ground where today’s Timbers play.

April 17, 1982: Timbers at Chicago In what would be the Timbers’ last season of any sort for a full seven years, the team played a springtime match against defending the NASL champion Chicago Sting on the hallowed grounds of Wrigley Field. It turned out to be a much more hotly contested encounter than it might have appeared it would be, with both teams showing the effects of a winter spent playing in NASL’s indoor league.

In an upcoming post, we'll feature the players from these historic matches who will be joining us.

Tickets are $12.00 in advance through Eventbrite, $15.00 at the door. Look forward to seeing you there!

Beating Seattle Never Gets Old: A Benefit for Bless Field

NewColumbiaWe've told you about Bless Field, the micro-pitch OPI is building for the kids in the New Columbia neighborhood. You'll be hearing a lot more about this project throughout 2013 starting with an amazing fundraiser that you won't want to miss. Thursday April 4; 7:00 pm Hollywood Theatre, 4122 NE Sandy Blvd $12 in advance through Eventbrite; $15 at the door

Join Operation Pitch Invasion, the 107 Independent Supporters Trust and "5 Minutes to Kickoff" for an evening celebrating Soccer City USA's past and creating Soccer City USA's future.   To help build Bless Field in the New Columbia community, a field on which a future Timbers or Thorns (!) star will be born, we'll look back at the roots of major league soccer in Portland with some of the legends who played here, men who filled the stadium with fans and stayed on to help turn those fans into a true community of soccer players and supporters.

Come see highlights of the Timbers playing against Pele and his Cosmos in Portland in 1976; the Timbers playing the Chicago Sting at Wrigley Field in 1982; and, in an extended cut, the Timbers playing the Seattle Sounders in a playoff semifinal before a record crowd in Portland in 1975.     Commenting throughout the evening will be the players on the screen themselves, among them Willie Anderson, Bernie Fagan, Roger Goldingay, Mick Hoban, Bill Irwin, and Jimmy Kelly, along with “5MTKO” hosts Bob Kellett and Steven Lenhart.     Thanks to the Hollywood Theatre's generosity, every cent of admission goes directly toward building Bless Field at New Columbia.     Bless Field, scheduled to open later this year, will be an all-weather turf field serving kids from 22 countries who speak 11 languages -- plus, of course, the international language of soccer.     With the organizational support of the Regence Boys and Girls Club (immediately adjacent to the field) and instructional guidance from the Timbers Academy, 107ist volunteer coaches and mentors will institute a program of instruction and organized play on Bless Field (named for the late Timbers Army stalwart General Timber Howie Bless). The field will also support programming by AC Portland in concert with Rosa Parks Elementary School (also adjacent).   And someday -- not far long from now, either -- one of those kids who learns to play the game at Bless Field will score a meaningful goal for the Timbers or Thorns (!) at JELD-WEN Field, and the connection of Team-Town-Timbers Army will be complete.   Efforts are now underway to raise the approximately $200,000 needed to see the project through, and this event marks the launch of that fundraising drive. The Portland Timbers and 107ist are already committed to significant contributions to the campaign, but you can take part, too, by attending this evening.    “Beating Seattle Never Gets Old” promises to be one of those epic Soccer City USA events that you’ll brag about attending years from now. Only 350 tickets are available, so get yours now.

Save the Dates: 2013 Workdays Scheduled

Hello All- With the season underway it'll soon be time to lend a hand to improve our City's parks. We have four dates lined up for 2013. We'll visit some new locations and return to update some of our past work. We've avoided all Timbers home game days this year so we hope to see you all out in the parks with us this season.

MEMO0022

As before, we'll need 40-50 volunteers for each of our events. We typically start around 8:30 and get done in 3-4 hours. We work rain or shine (though we've been pretty lucky so far). We'll open up volunteer opportunities 3-4 weeks before each event and coordinate all volunteer registrations through Eventbrite. Full details will be provided when the dates get closer - for now, all we want you to do is save the dates!

  • Saturday, April 20. Park improvement, 3 fields.
  • Saturday, May 11. Park improvement, 2 fields.
  • Saturday, June 22. Park improvement, 2 fields.
  • Saturday, August 31. Park improvement, 3 fields.

The best way to stay up to date on our events is to subscribe to our mailing list. We won't spam you and you can unsubscribe at any time. If you have previously volunteered for one of our events, you are already on our mailing list (and thanks!).

Look forward to working with you in 2013!

New Project: Bless Field at New Columbia

The last couple years have been amazing for OPI. We've marshaled over 900 hours of volunteer labor to improve our City's pitches. Those volunteers helped level, seed and restor eight different fields, repaint 70 goals, remove yards of concrete and repair countless pieces of irrigation equipment. We've improved or added pitches to 4 different City parks and 2 of Portland's schools. We are immensely proud of our volunteers who make all this work possible. But this year we're on to something we hope will be our biggest project yet.

And we'll need your help to make it happen.

This year we're working to build Bless Field: a youth-sized all-season pitch for the kids of Portland's New Columbia neighborhood.

NewColumbia

The New Columbia community is home to nearly 1,200 kids from 22 countries speaking more than 11 different languages and we see Bless Field as a place where all of these kids can share the common language that is the beautiful game. Bless Field is designed to support AC Portland sponsored events through nearby Rosa Parks Elementary School and after-school programs through the Regence Boys & Girls Club. It's not so impossible to imagine Bless Field becoming a place where a future Timbers or Thorns star will learn the game and go on to score a winning goal at JELD-WEN Field in front of the best supporters in the world.

NC Map.001

Its a major project for sure - but one worthy of the effort. In the weeks to come, we'll be sharing more details about how you can help make this project happen.

To stay up on the latest, keep an eye on our blog, give us a follow on Twitter (@OPIPDX) and join our mailing list. You can also bookmark and share this page on the OPI website that contains all the latest on the Bless Field project.

Goal! Painted - OPI Restores Goal Equipment with PPR

On August 5, a blistering Sunday morning, some four dozen Operation Pitch Invasion volunteers descended on a Portland Parks and Recreation storage facility in SE Portland to restore several score soccer goals to shiny, playable condition. In the course of about 4 hours, the OPI crew sorted, scraped, repainted and stored away approximately 75 goals (1 crossbar and 2 stanchions each), creating glistening white equipment where there was once a pile of rusted, dingy metal. The goals will now be used throughout the PPR soccer field inventory for the upcoming soccer season.

These repairs make the equipment look great, yes, but this wasn't just a cosmetic touch-up job. The restoration extends the life of the equipment as well. But that said, there's something nice about showing up to play a seeing the goals looking fresh.

The PPR crew laid out a barbecue lunch for the OPI volunteers, who gobbled burgers and hot dogs before rushing off to Jeld-Wen Field and the Timbers match. A job well done and a memorable day.

OPI will be back in action on August 25, restoring the fields at Clinton park. Details and volunteer sign-ups soon to be announced.

OPI Workday - Equipment Repair - August 5

Hello OPI Supporters!

Time again to support our City and the game we love with another OPI workday. We’ve got something a bit different this time and it should be lots of fun.

For this event we’ll be teaming up with our friends at Portland Parks and Recreation to prep and paint the City’s inventory of steel goal equipment. PPR has graciously offered to host a BBQ of hot dogs and burgers for volunteers. Also, recognizing that the Timbers have a 4:00 p.m. kickoff v FC Dallas, we’ll have early admission TA wristbands for volunteers. Sound good? Details below.

  • When is it? Sunday, August 5. Work begins at 8:30 a.m.
  • Where is it? We’ll be meeting at the PPR maintenance facility located at 6437 SE Division (map). There is plenty of parking and restrooms on site.
  • How do I participate? You must sign up on our Eventbrite page (free). We can accomodate up to 50 participants for this event. We’ll have early admission wristbands for those who volunteer - you must be registered and in attendance to receive your wristband. One wristband per person! If your buddy needs a wristband, your buddy needs to volunteer! ou'll be asked to sign the City's liability waiver when you arrive. By volunteering, you also agree to OPI's liability waiver.
  • What kind of work will we be doing? The City has approximately 100 goals at the facility. We’ll prep and paint as many as we can in the time allotted.
  • What should I bring? You only need to bring clothes you don’t mind getting paint on. Work gloves (latex can be good when painting) might be a good idea. Also, a simple dust mask might make some of the work a bit easier. All other supplies and equipment will be provided by PPR. Don’t forget your sunscreen!
  • How long will it take? The match vs. FC Dallas is at 4:00. Wristbands will be handed out around lunch. The wristband gate opens at 2:00 so folks with wristbands will want to finish up and head downtown between 12:00–12:30. We expect to have everything wrapped up by 1:00 or so.

Prep and paint is key to ensuring that this equipment enjoys a long life at the ends of our pitches so your help on this event is appreciated. If you can’t make this event, be sure to block out August 25 and September 22 on your calendar and keep an eye on our blog for more information about other OPI events and activities.

We Need Your Help - Vote Nando!

The message is simple: VOTE NANDO!!!!

If you’re a Timbers fan, you probably know Fernando Machicado — or Nando as he’s called by almost everyone.

Perhaps you’ve seen him managing the crew at the 107ist merchandise van, or running charitable events for 107ist and Operation Pitch Invasion, or helping to manage Timbers Army game day operations inside JELDWEN Field, or maybe you remember his image from one of those epic Rose City Till I Die billboards: his sat right across the street from Powell’s and then, blown up to 747-size, on the parking garage on Broadway near Burnside.

Wherever the Timbers Army is, especially when it’s involved with charitable works, Nando is at the forefront — or, more often, behind the scenes, working in advance with community partners, sponsors, donors, and Timbers Army volunteers to make stuff happen. In addition to being the president of Operation Pitch Invasion, he sits on the board of the 107 Independent Supporters Trust, where he chairs the Game Day Operations and Merchandise Committees and co-chairs the Community Outreach Committee.

As part of his 107ist commitments, Nando has been the spearhead of a program to bring soccer gear and mentorship to 4-15 year olds at the Tamarak Apartments, a public housing complex with a history of losing kids to gangs, and he has been 107ist’s principal liaison to the Portland Public Schools, providing an avenue for the Timbers Army to donate equipment and sweat-equity hours to soccer programs at four local high schools.

With Operation Pitch Invasion, he has helped rehabilitate the soccer fields at several Portland parks, helped put a turf field where a blacktop once sat in a North Portland schoolyard, is negotiating the funding and installation of an artificial turf soccer field at New Columbia (another public housing project in an economically disadvantaged community), and helping to assemble a program of volunteer coaches and instructors for a soccer program at the new field.

It’s safe to say that Nando’s commitment to the game of soccer, the local community, and the Timbers Army and its various organizational and charitable bodies makes him a living embodiment of the phrase Rose City Till I Die. He exemplifies the Eternal Golden Triangle of Team/Town/Timbers Army.

Nando has been nominated by the Timbers front office as their candidate as MLS W.O.R.K.S. 2012 Community MVP, which involves a $10,000 award which he intends to donate to Operation Pitch Invasion, and you can help him win. The prize is being awarded on the basis of votes cast on the web, and (and this is the genius part) you can vote as many times as you care to (and we hope you’ll care to a lot). Simply visit http://www.mlssoccer.com/mlsworks/community-mvp/vote, click on Nando’s name (Fernando Machicado), and cast your ballot.

For all subsequent votes, do the same as above and then enter the captcha codes you’ll see on the screen. Do this often enough and you can actually see Nando rise in the standings before your eyes! Voting ends at 2 pm Pacific on Friday, July 13, and we’d like to see Nando’s name on top of that column at 2:01.

Maybe you’ve wanted to get involved in the charity works of 107ist and Operation Pitch Invasion but haven’t quite been able to find the time. But throughout this week, if you take a few minutes once or twice a day and bang on that voting booth a couple of times, you could be the person who puts Nando over the top and brings OPI $10,000 closer to a signature project that will add immeasurably to the legacy of Soccer City USA. You know you’ve got the time to spare. Go on and vote!

Completed! Bloomington Park

On June 30, Operation Pitch Invasion rehabilitated the soccer fields at Bloomington Park in SE Portland in a quick morning's work. Under the supervision of Portland Parks and Recreation employees, 50-plus Timbers Army, 107ist members and OPI volunteers filled potholes, spread grass seed, repainted goal posts and replaced and repaired a couple dozen sprinkler heads. The Parks crew were deeply impressed with the speed and quality of the work -- "this would have taken us weeks," they said repeatedly -- and were grateful for care which they said would actually improve the facility in the long run.

OPI has a few more invasions planned in its Summer 2012 Campaign, as well as a day of painting and repairing goal structures currently houses at a Portland Parks equiment facility. Keep these dates on your calendar - details to be announced closer to the event.

  • Sunday, August 5. Equipment improvement. Dallas at Portland at 4:00.
  • Saturday, August 25. Park improvement. Vancouver at Portland at 7:30
  • Saturday, September 22. Park improvement. Salt Lake away at 5:00
  • The best way to stay up to date on our events is to subscribe to our mailing list (see signup widget at the bottom of the page)! We won’t spam you and you can unsubscribe at any time.

Upcoming Event! Bloomington Park - June 30, 2012

Hey Everyone

Its time once again to grab your work gloves and join OPI to help make our City’s pitches a better place to enjoy the beautiful game. For our first event of the summer we’ll be fixing up the full sized grass pitch at Bloomington Park in Southeast Portland on Saturday, June 30. Full details below:

  • Where is it? Bloomington Park. SE 100th Avenue & Steele Street (map)
  • When is it? Saturday, June 30. Work begins at 8:30 a.m. Please arrive on time as you’ll need to sign the City’s liability waiver before beginning work.
  • How do I participate? You MUST sign up on our Eventbrite page (free). For this first event, we’re capping registration at 50 participants. Also, you must have previously signed up on OPI’s mailing list or be members of the 107ist. Anyone who will be meaningfully digging needs to register. Kids who won’t be working do not need to register (but feel free to bring them out).
  • What kind of work will we be doing? The work will be similar to what we did at Ed Benedict last summer. Work will include things like moving soil to fill the ruts and uneven spots in the pitch, leveling the surface, overseeding the soil and excavation and repair of the park’s irrigation system. PPR personnel will be on hand to supervise and direct the work. We also hope to have some lighter duties available (cleaning and painting the goals) for those who may not be able to dig.
  • What should I bring? All tools will be provided by the City of Portland so leave your shovels and wheelbarrows at home. You should bring work gloves and appropriate footwaear. If it is cool, wear layers! If it is sunny, bring suncreen! We’ll have some family friendly beverages and small breakfasty items on hand.
  • How long will it take? If you ask City personnel, our work rate is legendary. Expect 3–5 hours. We’ll be done in plenty of time to get you on your way to your favorite viewing location for Timbers at Colorado Rapids at 6:00 p.m.

Can’t make this one? No worries. We have 3 more events scheduled for this summer - be sure to add those dates to your calendar. Keep an eye on this space for more information and where/how to sign up. Questions? Drop us a line at volunteer [at] pitch-invasion [dot] org.

OPI 2012 Workdays - Save the Date!!

Hello, friends. We have been hard at work lining up some great events for 2012. Last year's events at Ed Benedict Park and James John Elementary were hugely popular. So, we've lined up more events just like that: some hard work with good friends to make our City's pitches and soccer equipment just a little bit better.

We'll be looking for at least 50 volunteers for each of our events. We'll start early, 8:00 or 9:00 a.m. In some cases, we may need two shifts of volunteers to get all the work done. But for now, we just want you to save the dates! Full details and a sign-up form for each of these events will follow when the dates get closer. On away match days, we'll try and coordinate a viewing party at a nearby pub. On home match days, we'll be sure to get done in time so you can get to your local in time for pre-match festivities.

  • Saturday, June 30. Park improvement. Colorado away at 6:00.
  • Sunday, August 5. Equipment improvement. Dallas at Portland at 4:00.
  • Saturday, August 25. Park improvement. Vancouver at Portland at 7:30
  • Saturday, September 22. Park improvement. Salt Lake away at 5:00

The best way to stay up to date on our events is to subscribe to our mailing list! We won't spam you and you can unsubscribe at any time. If you have previously volunteered for one of our events, you are already on our mailing list.

Thanks for your support! Looking forward to working with you in 2012!

James John Elementary - July 23 & 30, 2011

In cooperation with AC Portland and Depave, OPI gathered up the Timbers Army and members of the community to help with this depaving and field installation project in St. Johns. OPI helped with asphalt removal and landscaping in anticipation of the installation of an artificial turf field at James John Elementary School.

A big thanks to Depave, AC Portland, James John PTA, St Johns Main Street Coalition and others for (de)paving the for a pitch installation at this location!! See photos and more at Depave's website.

Ed Benedict Park - July 16, 2011

OPI's first project was a shovel-ready half-day restoration of two pitches at Portland's Ed Benedict Park on Saturday, July 16. For this inaugural project, volunteers came exclusively from OPI's partner organization, the 107 Independent Supporters Trust. The event was a great success. With help from volunteers and Portland Parks and Recreation, OPI

  • repaired the previously inoperable irrigation systems on two pitches
  • leveled, fertilized and seeded one rutted and bumpy pitch
  • restored the goal box areas on two pitches

Most notably, this work returned a pitch to service that was previously unplayable, literally making more fields available for Portlanders to enjoy the beautiful game.

Thanks again to 107ist, Portland Parks and Recreation and the Timbers Army for making the Ed Benedict Park project and OPI a reality. We look forward to repairing more of our City’s pitches with you, one at a time!

Ed Benedict Park Project Completed!

OPI-Logo-Large-e1309413074856.jpg

Thank You!

Yesterday, volunteers from the 107 Independent Supporters Trust and employees from Portland Parks and Recreation gathered to restore two pitches in Ed Benedict Park in the inaugural event for Operation Pitch Invasion. The event was a great success. With your help, OPI

  • repaired the previously inoperable irrigation systems on two pitches
  • leveled, fertilized and seeded one rutted and bumpy pitch
  • restored the goal box areas on two pitches

Most notably, your work today returned a pitch to service that was previously unplayable, literally making more fields available for Portlanders to enjoy the beautiful game. Thank you!

Our work isn't done. As many of you know, OPI is helping 107ist and AC Portland with a major project at James John Elementary and we need your help! We ask that you join us next Saturday, July 23, to help with removal and disposal of asphalt brownies as we turn pavement into a pitch. We have arranged a post work party at St Johns Pub to watch the Timbers take on the Crew. Visit the OPI website for more information or sign up to volunteer!

Thanks again to 107ist, Portland Parks and Recreation and the Timbers Army for making today's work and OPI a reality. We look forward to repairing more of our City's pitches with you, one at a time.
